Eco Stations accept household hazardous waste, electronics, recyclables, yard waste, bulky items and more.

In an effort to contain the spread of COVID-19, the following changes are in effect until further notice:
- Cash payments are not accepted
- Kennedale Eco Station: Reuse and paint exchange areas closed: paint drop-off open
- Coronation and Strathcona Eco Stations: Paint exchange areas closed: paint drop-off open

As per AHS recommendations, those who are feeling unwell are encouraged to stay home to help prevent or limit exposure to the illness.

EWMC Closed
The Edmonton Waste Management Centre site is closed to the public today, March 13, 2019. There is no impact to residential collection at this time.

Please note: the Reuse Areas within the Kennedale and Ambleside Eco Stations will remain closed until Stage 3 of the province’s relaunch plan and are not accepting donations.

Eco Station Fees

Free drop-off weekends at Eco Stations

Only residential materials can be dropped off at no cost during the June 26-27 and September 25-26 weekends. Fees will be applied to commercial waste.

All events will run from 9am-7pm.
 

Big Bin Event are returning this weekend, June 5-6, from 9am-5pm. Alberta Health Services safety guidelines will be in place. To learn more, visit edmonton.ca/bigbinevents

Cash payments are not available at Eco Stations until further notice. Only Visa, MasterCard, American Express and debit cards are accepted at this time.

Note: Eco Station attendants have final say about the acceptability of items and the charges applied to each load.

Electronics

This includes anything with a cord or battery such as:

  • Old computer components
  • Cell phones
  • Phones, fax machines, answering machines
  • Power tools, vacuum cleaners, floor polishers
Household Garbage

Up to 2 clear garbage bags. 

  • Must not contain any food scraps, yard waste or recycling
  • Waste in non-clear bags will be subject to fees
Household Hazardous Waste

This includes items such as:

  • Automotive: motor oil, oil filters, car batteries, antifreeze, gas, diesel, rust remover, all automotive fluids
  • Chemicals and cleaners: bleach, drain, toilet, oven cleaners, spot removers; herbicide, pesticide, fertilizer, photo chemicals and glues
  • Lighting: all light bulbs, fluorescent tubes/ballasts, lighting fixtures
  • Paint and stains: including aerosols, full or empty, maximum container size - 20 litres
  • Other: aerosol cans, caulking, cement powder, fire extinguishers, propane tanks or bottles, smoke detectors, needles and syringes
Recyclable Materials Newspaper, metal cans, plastic bags
Clean, segregated
Scrap Metal BBQs, bicycles, rebar
Clean, segregated
Tires Only tires managed under the Provincial Tire Recycling Program
Yard Waste (residential and non-residential) This includes loose or paper bagged, clean and segregated:
  • Yard waste: bark, grass clippings, fallen tree fruits, houseplants, leaves, mulch, pine cones and needles, woodchips, and yard and garden trimmings
  • Branches and trees: sticks and twigs, stumps, tree roots, tree trimmings and trunks

Paint Exchange

Residents can continue dropping off paint. However, the paint exchange is paused until further notice.

Items Not Accepted

  • Commercial hazardous waste
  • Commercial biomedical waste
  • Expired medications (take back to your pharmacy for proper disposal)
  • Radioactive waste
  • Pressurized gases

Used personal protective equipment (PPE), which includes face masks and gloves, cannot be recycled.

Safely dispose of used PPE in a waste bin to protect the health and safety of all Edmontonians. It will also help protect crews and volunteers picking up litter around the city.

City of Edmonton Compost available at Ambleside and Kennedale Eco Stations starting May 15, 2021.

Residents who show commitment to learning about the Edmonton Cart Rollout or engage in waste reduction behaviours will have the opportunity to collect City of Edmonton Compost, free of charge.

This horticultural compost was processed at the EWMC cure site, using the yard waste that was dropped off to the Eco Stations in 2020, as well as yard waste collected from the Edmonton Cart Rollout demonstration areas. It is suitable for landscaping, gardening, tree and shrub planting and top dressing. 

Ways to Collect City of Edmonton Compost

City of Edmonton Compost is self-serve. Please bring your own shovel, gloves, pail(s), container(s) and/or bag(s). Bring tarps to keep your load secure. Please do not collect more than 100L of compost at a time (about the size of 5 pails (20L), equivalent to 37.5 kilograms). Available only at Ambleside and Kennedale locations.

Tips

  • Try to access facilities at off-peak hours
    • Sundays and 5-7pm on weekdays
  • Load your vehicle strategically
    • Place smaller items in your vehicle first, bulky items last, and keeping different types of items separate 
  • Don’t mix yard waste, refuse and scrap metal
    • Keep it easily accessible
  • Expect and prepare for longer wait times
  • Be mindful
    • Please do not block entrances of other businesses while waiting in Eco Station lineups

Remember to practice physical distancing guidelines when visiting an Eco Station.

Recycle Your Batteries

When batteries enter the residential waste stream, they can leak toxic chemicals into the air, soil and water. They can also interact with other items in the trash and explode or catch fire. 

Avoid the risk by dropping off used batteries — big and small — at an Eco Station for safe recycling at no cost.

How to safely dispose of a battery:

  • Remove the battery from the device
  • Place tape over both ends of the battery, to prevent them from coming into other objects that could cause a reaction
  • Drop the battery off at an Eco Station, or one of the other locations listed above, for free

You may not realize how many devices contain batteries. If it makes noise, lights up or connects to the Internet, it probably contains a battery. Don’t forget about items like remote car locks, watches, musical greeting cards and cell phones.
