Things to See and Do

Features

City Hall Architecture

City Hall’s award winning architecture was designed by Edmonton architect Gene Dub and opened on August 28, 1992. Gene Dub’s design combines the old with the new by incorporating some of the materials such as marble and granite from the old City Hall into the new building. It is also designed as a ‘people place’ - a place for civic government and a gathering place for Edmontonians.

Art Guide

Home to 64 artworks that are accessible to visitors, the City Hall Art Guide explores the public art pieces located inside and outside City Hall.

City Hall Art Guide

The Arcade

This three-storey entrance corridor is located directly inside the south main entrance. It connects directly to the Churchill LRT station pedway to the east and was designed to accommodate a future link to the west.

The Citizen and New Arrival Information Centre

The Citizen and New Arrival Information Centre is designed as a place where new and current citizens can come for information about the City of Edmonton.

Information boards with city and community event details stand in the south and north lobbies, and another showing current City job postings can be found directly opposite the Citizen and New Arrival Information Centre.

The City Room

Located on the main floor, the City Room is the main public area and focal point of the building. Designed for public gatherings, presentations, and events, this area is bathed in natural light from an eight-storey glass pyramid, which is cleaned by a hydraulic arm (designed and built in Edmonton), which can also be used to hang decorations.

The virtually non-destructible floor incorporates travertine (honey-coloured stone) from the former City Hall with terrazzo (grey-coloured stone). The wood throughout the building's interior is maple and was laser cut to meet the acoustic needs of the City Room's upper storey.

The City of Edmonton Sports Hall of Fame

The Sports Hall of Fame is a gallery of those recognized by the City since 1960 for their contributions to sports in Edmonton. This past year's inductees are recognized in a special display in the north lobby on the main floor.

The Councillor's Wing

The Councillor's Wing protects the plaza from north-west winds and houses the twelve Councillors on the top floor. The green marble on the top floor exterior was reclaimed from the former City Hall's elevator lobbies.

The Friendship Tower

The Friendship Tower stands 200-feet high on the south side of City Hall, thanks to $1 million in community funding. It features a 40,000-pound and 23-bell carillon that can play up to 99 melodies. A manual keyboard can be used to play any other song for a special occasion.

Hallway Cafe

Located on the main floor, the Hallway Cafe focuses on sustainability and supports the development of youth within the work experience program.

Hallway Cafe

The North Lobby

City Hall's second main entranceway. The breezeway outside was designed for vehicular traffic including official delegations, motorcades, and drop-off traffic. A night depository for bill payments is conveniently accessible to the public just outside the north entrance.

The South Steps and Plaza

Designed as a focal point for community events, the plaza, City Hall and Churchill Square can jointly host large public gatherings. The pool is a popular spot for wading in the summer and for skating in the winter. An indoor skate change room is located adjacent to the rink.

The West Courtyard

The West Courtyard holds the "Migrants", a Canada goose statue and fountain symbolizing flight and progress, which was brought back by popular demand! It acquired the nickname, "the Spaghetti Tree" when it stood on the grounds of the former City Hall.
